The Independent Study Program is
designed to provide opportunities for
students to extend or explore learning
experiences. Students may engage in
Independent Study in a variety of ways:
Extended or Enriched Independent Study
(EIS), which allows a student to investigate
an area of interest that is an extension of
the current courses offered; Community
Service (CS), which consists of voluntary
service in a variety of school or
community settings; or Career Exploration
(CE), which allows the student an
opportunity to explore a specific career or
occupation in depth through an
internship.
Independent Study is available
to students in Grades 10-12; credits
earned apply toward graduation but not
toward class rank. Grading is Pass/Fail. The Study cannot be
used to fulfill specific course requirements
as specified by the Board of Education. A
student doing Independent Study must
secure a mentor; submit a proposal,
which must be approved by a school
committee; and engage in the activities
without major assistance from teachers.
In many cases the Study will take place
outside the normal hours of the school
day.
