On the Academic Team, students collaborate in teams of four to compete in a modified Quiz-Bowl format to answer questions in 30 different categories such as science, sports, math, and the arts. HHS Math Team belongs to the Central Jersey Math Team League and the New Jersey Mathematics League. The team also competes in: The New Jersey Math Competition, the American Mathematics Contests 10 and 12 and the Andrushkiw Competition held at Seton Hall University. Membership in the Central Jersey Math League, CJML, requires that once, for each of six months, on a Wednesday after school, ten students (who have been selected based on Math background) travel by bus to a school in Central New Jersey. These students represent HHS as they take a math test which requires knowledge up to (but not including) calculus. After the hour long test, the students are treated to refreshments by the hosting school. Before returning to HHS, the team is informed of how each competitor and their school performed. At the end of the year, students who have scored among the top 50 in the league are invited to compete in the ARML (American Region's Math League) competition which is held at Penn State University. During the winter months of January and February, the CJML team competes at home under conditions similar to those imposed for away meetings. Membership into the New Jersey Mathematics League was sought since many interested, younger "mathletes" were unable to enjoy the opportunity of competing regularly. The contests prepared by this league will be administered after school at HHS. They require only half an hour and any students who sign up can compete. Any math student will be eligible to sign up. Every math competition is run during school except for the Andrushkiw Competition at Seton Hall University. All competitions follow the guidelines of the sponsoring body. A superior performance in the American Mathematics Competition can result in opportunities to continue competing which include the American Invitation Mathematics Exam (AIME) and the USAMO (United States of America Mathematical Olympiad.
